According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, this year, US retail sales on Black Friday rose 12% year-over-year (YoY) excluding automotive. In the meantime, in-store sales grew 12% from the previous year and retail eCommerce sales grew 14%.
However, there is a discrepancy across data providers. For example, Adobe’s Holiday Shopping Report featured lower numbers with retail eCommerce sales rising 2.3% YoY to $9.1 billion, following a 2.9% YoY increase in retail eCommerce sales on Thanksgiving day to $5.3 billion.

There were a number of factors that contributed to the increase in online sales last Black Friday.
First of all, big discounts influenced consumers to spend. Per Adobe, Black Friday discounts for apparel reached 13.8%, electronics 23.4%, and toys 31.8%, across all retailers.
Secondly, the rise of mobile shopping has made it easier than ever to make purchases online – in the comfort of your own home or even on a lunch break. Shoppers can browse and buy products from their phones while they’re on the go. According to Adobe’s Holiday Shopping Report, 44.4% of online purchases this holiday season were made on mobile devices.
More than that, Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services have seen explosive growth in recent years. For instance, BNPL orders rose 78% the week of November 19 compared with the previous week, while BNPL revenue grew 81% over the same period. Furthermore, according to Statista, the value of BNPL transactions is set to reach $214 billion in 2022.
